Free or subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation for homes rated D–G
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) provides free or heavily subsidised insulation for homes in England with poor energy efficiency ratings. It targets two groups: low-income households in council tax bands A–D (and E in some areas) with EPC D or below, and households in any council tax band but in the lowest EPC ratings (E, F, G). Eligible measures include loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and solid wall insulation.
Find at gov.uk/council-tax. You need to be in band A–D (or E in some areas).
Look up at epcregister.com. You need D or below to qualify.
Visit gov.uk/apply-great-british-insulation-scheme to check eligibility and start your application.
An approved installer surveys your property to determine what's possible.
Works typically take one day. Loft insulation is the most common measure.
Private renters can apply but need their landlord's permission. Social renters should contact their housing association.
For group 1 (low income, bands A–D), it's free. For group 2 (all bands, EPC E–G), there may be a small contribution required.
Loft insulation or solid wall insulation may still be available if suitable.
Takes 2 minutes. No account needed. We'll also show you every other grant you're eligible for.
